Learning with Jonnie Rocket

Having read the book the Jonnie Rocket Quiz in the Kids Zone is a great game to start with.

The following guide may be helpful when assisting your child to complete the quiz:

  1. Do they understand the word illustrator to identify who drew the pictures?
  2. Using a variety of words also found on the same page will ensure that children are reading and understanding rather than looking for any word that matches an answer.
  3. Basic comprehension.
  4. Picture observation.
  5. Similar words – ensuring good phonics accuracy.
  6. As in No. 2 above.
  7. Children must use the text rather than looking at the picture and guessing.
  8. 3 & 8 can often be confused by children.
  9. Children tend to guess if words look familiar so they may go for any option, as all are plausible.
  10. Synonyms – children must read the text about Jonnie feeling good to be back, and understand him being happy.

Word Searches

Children love puzzles. Encourage your child to create a word search, cross word or treasure hunt using their favourite book as a theme. Swap with other family members / friends and help them to read the book before they try to solve the puzzle.

See the Jonnie Rocket Word Search provided in the Kids Zone.

There are also a number of other fun activities in the Kids Zone that children can enjoy, all aimed at encouraging an early interest in reading.

Non Fiction

Children are fascinated by the world around them, use this as a means of encouraging your child to read. In addition to reading Jonnie Rocket books about his space adventures, provide non fiction books about space which will provide different background information, enhancing their learning experience.  Libraries are great sources of non-fiction books.
